The human brain does a fantastic job making decisions in the future. If the goal is to improve health, we can decide to start eating healthier foods, exercising regularly, prioritizing sleep, managing stress, and all the other things we think will improve health. This plan and these habits will start tomorrow or on Monday. Then tomorrow rolls around. Monday fades into Tuesday. The same old habits play out. Maybe the new ones are tried, but they don’t last. Why? The human brain does not do a fantastic job making decisions in the present moment. That’s why we need to be able to start tomorrow now.

Start Tomorrow Now with Awareness

It all starts with awareness. Most decisions come down to two options. The first is to take the fun or easier path in the present. This typically has some long-term consequences. The second is to take the less desirable or more challenging path in the present. This typically pays off in the long run.

For example, the goal may be to eat healthy food and save money. After a long day, the options are to go out to dinner or go to the grocery store for supplies, and then to prepare a healthy dinner. Going out to dinner seems fun, easy, and delicious in the moment. However, it probably means spending a lot for one, unhealthy meal. That is not aligned with the goal of saving money and eating healthy food.

Going to the grocery store and making a meal sounds like a lot after a long day. It requires physical and mental energy. The brain works by trying to find the easiest way to complete the task in the moment. That default is likely going to be going out to dinner, especially if it is not something new. This explains why it is challenging to form new habits that take more energy.

What Is Really the Best Option?

In reality, the easier and better option long-term is to go to the grocery store and then make dinner. Yes, it could take more energy and thought in the moment. However, it provides the opportunity to gather enough ingredients for future meals, too. There could be leftovers for the following day. That makes it easier to choose a home meal the next evening. It prevents a lot of unpleasant thoughts and feelings about not acting in a way that leads to long-term goals.

How To Start Tomorrow Now

To start tomorrow now, consider where you are currently trading long-term benefits for short-term satisfaction. What feels good in the moment, but leads to results you don’t want? That’s the best place to start. Pause before you make a decision, every time. What option will benefit you most in the future? That’s the ‘tomorrow’ version of you. The decisions we make today will determine our tomorrow. What choices do you want to make for your ‘tomorrow’ self? Start tomorrow now. Make decisions now, for tomorrow, not for now. That’s how goals are achieved and dream lives are created.
